We develop intuitive, interactive, and intelligent user-centric solutions and systems to enable an inspiring and seamless user experience (UX) for future Bosch products and services. Our research is directed at addressing key technology challenges in conversational AI, immersive systems and new interaction technologies, which enable that vision. Together with our business unit partners, we adopt a minimum viable product (MVP) approach to acquire early feedback from end customers and facilitate fast production and market penetration of our user-centric solutions and systems.

The Cognitive Era

The ubiquitous availability of intelligent machines is a characteristic of the Cognitive Era. From the user’s perspective, the experience must be highly personal in order to take advantage of the offered functions and services. Are the systems acting according to the user’s needs, preferences and intentions? How much effort is needed from the user to make this happen? Is the user’s privacy protected? Positive answers to these and similar questions are essential to reach user enthusiasm and society acceptance.

Interaction technologies

The envisaged UX will be the central design and development cue for new interaction technologies. These technologies are bidirectional translators between the user and the system; they have to understand the user’s needs and intentions in order to create a direct experience in a natural but impressive way. Breakthroughs in user-centric computing and interaction technologies will cause a fundamental paradigm shift for human-computer interactions.

The focus at Bosch

We are directing our focus towards four key technologies in this group:

  • conversational AI that can seamlessly understand user’s verbally expressed intentions and assist in open context;
  • intelligent mixed reality systems, comprising augmented and virtual reality technologies that understand context, user intent, and emotion;
  • display technologies, including light field displays and holographic optics; and
  • brain-computer interfaces, with invasive and non-invasive brain stimulation and interpretation.

Additionally, research in user-centric computing and interaction will support solutions like self-aware and self-developing systems (self-X systems) and connected and intelligent systems and services.


Bosch is pursuing the key technologies that will revolutionize user experience and usher in a new era of human-machine interaction and amplified intelligence.
